Embodied Carbon Pathways: Material Innovations and Specifications - September 1, 2021
Pathways to Net Zero Carbon Concrete
This session is focused on embodied impacts of concrete construction, which can be a large component of a building’s embodied environmental impact. Strategies for reducing concrete’s embodied environmental impacts will be shared from two perspectives: material innovations and specifications. The strategies will include short-term actions along with pathways that will be needed to eventually achieve net zero or possibly net negative impacts.
Learning Objective 1:
Define net zero embodied environmental impacts.
Learning Objective 2:
Describe innovative material solutions that can be used to achieve net zero embodied concrete.
Learning Objective 3:
Implement performance-based specifications to encourage innovation in low-carbon concrete mixtures that meet performance requirements.
Learning Objective 4:
Explain the role that architects, engineers and contractors play in implementing low-carbon concrete mixtures in construction projects.
